About the Production
The film credited with a mass resurgence of interest in brass bands, Brassed Off brought comedy, pathos, tragedy and music to the big screen in a powerful story of a brass band and its coal-miner members struggling with the threatened closure of their pit and, maybe, the band. Danny (Pete Postlethwaite, in one of his finest performances), the band’s conductor, is facing mutiny in the ranks as well as battles with his own health and worry for his desperate son, Phil (Stephen Tomkinson). Meanwhile, Andy (Ewan McGregor) is distracted by an old flame, Gloria (Tara Fitzgerald), who joins the band but is also compiling a report on the pit closure. Will the band be able to play in the finals of the National Brass Band Championships at the Royal Albert Hall?
With a supporting cast of brilliant character actors, including Jim Carter, Sue Johnston and Philip Jackson, Brassed Off remains a hugely popular film and the soundtrack of brass band classics, played by the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, is now world-famous.
The première of Brassed Off – Live brought together almost all the principal cast, together with director Mark Herman and producer Steve Abbott, for a special opening Q&A. The Grimethorpe Colliery Band, alongside members of the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, played the soundtrack live conducted by Ludwig Wicki.
Brassed Off is rights-owned by Film Four and licensed by Royal Albert Hall.
